In a significant development for African digital commerce, Flutterwave has announced a strategic partnership with American Express that enhances payment capabilities for Nigerian online merchants. The initiative, announced by Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, marks a substantial advancement in connecting global payment networks with African markets.

The collaboration enables Flutterwave’s e-commerce merchants in Nigeria to process payments from American Express Card Members across all categories, including consumer, business, and corporate cardholders. Under the direction of Flutterwave CEO Agboola, the company plans to expand these capabilities to additional markets, specifically Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana, and Uganda, demonstrating its commitment to regional growth.

The partnership builds upon Flutterwave’s established success in the African payments sector, where the company has processed over 630 million transactions exceeding USD $31 billion in value. This achievement underscores the robustness of Flutterwave’s infrastructure, which serves prominent clients including Uber and Air Peace through its integrated API platform.

Discussing the partnership’s strategic importance, Flutterwave CEO Agboola emphasized the company’s mission of enhancing payment connectivity between global markets and Africa. The collaboration delivers significant benefits to the e-commerce ecosystem: merchants gain access to American Express’s extensive cardholder network, while consumers benefit from increased payment flexibility. This alignment strengthens American Express’s African presence while expanding transaction capabilities for their Card Members throughout the region.

Briana Wilsey, Vice President and General Manager of Global Network Services EMEA at American Express, highlighted the partnership’s mutual advantages, noting how it simultaneously expands payment options for businesses while reinforcing American Express’s market presence in Nigeria. The integration promises to streamline payment processing while enhancing operational capabilities for e-commerce enterprises utilizing Flutterwave’s platform.

This announcement follows several strategic achievements, including securing a Payment Service Provider license in Ghana and establishing operations in Mozambique. Through its comprehensive payment infrastructure spanning 34 African countries, Flutterwave facilitates various transaction types, from local and international card payments to mobile wallet transfers.

The partnership represents a significant advancement in African financial technology, positioning Flutterwave as a key facilitator of digital commerce innovation. By combining American Express’s global network with Flutterwave’s regional expertise, the collaboration creates new opportunities for business expansion while enhancing consumer payment options across the continent.

This strategic alignment demonstrates Flutterwave’s ongoing commitment to developing Africa’s digital payment infrastructure, establishing new standards for cross-border commerce, and promoting financial inclusion throughout the region. The initiative marks another milestone in realizing the company’s vision of seamless global-African payment integration, supporting both local business growth and international market access.
